How To Quickly Spot A Clout Chaser
2 min readAug 3, 2021
A clout chaser is someone who acts and says things in order to get popularity. It’s typically applied to persons on social media who are thirsty for attention and followers.
The word gained popularity in 2016 as a technique to identify “fake” persons who pretend to be someone they are not in order to gain attention. While it has its roots in hip-hop music, thanks to big brother naija, it has since grown in popularity on social media.
Here’s how to identify a clout chaser
- If they speak badly about others just to make themselves feel good or hide from their own problems. E.g.: If you decide to dig up bad things about your competitor, just to make yourself look like the better person and get people’s attention. No, that is not you trying to survive, you are just wicked.
- If the person supports only famous people, especially celebrities but won’t do the same for their close ones.
- They post all their life on social media, all in the name of “content”. Your followers already know your route from work, time you sleep, what your house looks like, etc. You think you are gaining fame, but you are only putting yourself in a risky spot.
- People who come on social media to ask questions that you can easily search for online. Then, they add, I am asking for a friend. Which friend?
- Any small thing, they are throwing shades at someone. You will always see something like, “haters gonna hate me for making my dough”, which dough do you have?! Their DM is food for people’s timeline. Someone sends you a DM and next thing, you have posted it for people to dissect. How does a private message make sense for the public eye?
- You always have gist that happened “the other day” for your timeline, even when we know that most of it is, “Hi Uncle Joro, please keep me anonymous”
With these few points of mine, do you think you are a clout chaser? Or do you know someone who this reminds you of? Or you think you are but you are not sure? Let me know in the comment section
